UPDATE: Whether or not the Suarez controversy had any impact on Uruguay’s play is debatable. But what isn’t debatable is the final score: Colombia beats Uruguay, 2-0, and advances to face home town team Brazil in the quarterfinal.

Previous post:

In the past week, Uruguay’s made headlines around the world, and not because they beat Italy and advanced to the knockout stage. After Luis Suarez bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in their win Tuesday, the entire world’s attention has been trained on Suarez and his home country. It’s certain that Suarez won’t be playing in this match – he’s been banned by FIFA for nine matches and four months – but what’s less clear is if the negative attention will have an impact on his team. Find out at 4 PM ET (8 PM UTC).

Internet Bites Back Against Suarez

Luis Suarez’s biting incident during Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Italy isn’t the first – Suarez was previously fined and suspended for biting players on two separate occasions.

Between the old incidents and this new one, the Internet has leased a fury of biting memes (pun intended) against Suarez:

During Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Italy, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez appeared to bite Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini – an action that, despite Chiellini’s protests, went uncalled by referees.

UPDATE: Uruguay scores on a late goal, beating Italy 1-0 and advancing to the Round of 16. With the win, Uruguay knocks four-time World Cup champions Italy out in the group round.

Previous post:

The first match of the day (12 PM ET; 4 PM UTC) is arguably the most exciting: with Costa Rica into the Round of 16 and England knocked out, Italy and Uruguay are the last teams standing in Group D.  Both teams have one win and one loss, and are separated by a one goal differential. Whoever wins this match is into the knockout round; if they tie, Italy will advance based on goals.
